Egypt - Confiscated Chimpanzees

May 2026 Seizure: Customs and veterinary officials at Cairo International Airport intercepted an Egyptian passenger attempting to smuggle three infant chimpanzees and rare reptiles to India. The chimpanzees were found heavily sedated and hidden in luggage.

Care and Relocation: To ensure their survival and recovery, the Agriculture Ministry transferred the confiscated chimpanzees to the Alexandria Zoo for emergency medical and behavioral rehabilitation.

Legal Action: The smuggler violated national wildlife protection laws and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), and was referred to authorities for legal action
