U.S. Wildlife Agency Press Release
Real Assistance or Bandaid?
The Wildlife Conservation Society spends annually over U$ 1 million of
donor money to try to protect wildlife in one single logging concession
in Northern Congo.
In contrast the US
Wildlife Agency puts out a press release patting
itself on the shoulder for contributing : "U$ 750 000 to wildlife
protection various projects in Asia, the Caribbean and Africa" that is
less then the proverbial drop of water on a hot stone.
As I recall the Great Ape Protection Act/Fund (part of the above) was
celebrated with similar fanfares. It was authorized to a level of
U$ 5 million; in the intital years distribution came to some U$ 50,000.
This approach of claiming credit for applying a band aid on a patient
who is dying of terminal cancer is a big part of the problem
This was brought to our attention by our friends at Save
the Elephants.
